a mechanical gyro braking system for slopestyle and freeride mountain biking milled out of 6061 aluminum. designed and fabricated for JCHS's Senior Keystone project in 2023.
overview:
a mechanical detangler, known more commonly as a gyro, allows the bars on a bmx or mountain bike to spin freely without a brake cable snagging, while retaining a brake.
it consists of three main parts: an upper plate, where the cable barrel adjusters from the brake lever connect; a lower plate, where the barrel adjusters from the brake caliper connect; and a two-piece rotor mechanism between them. the rotor's two halves are separated by a nylon bushing, allowing them to spin freely around the steerer relative to each other. when you pull the lever, the upper cable lifts the rotor, which pulls both plate upward and transfers the force to the rear brake cable. because the upper and lower plates rotate independently of each other, the handlebars can spin endlessly without twisting the brake line.
